Do you have “Tilt”?

Most of us do.

Tilt is a poker term for a state of mental or emotional confusion or frustration in which a player adopts a less than optimal strategy, usually resulting in the player becoming over-aggressive...placing an opponent on Tilt, or dealing with being on Tilt is an very important aspect of poker.

Even the best professional poker players have to deal with tilt. Your opponent is a fish, you have AcJc, and he has 72o. The flop comes 7c9s2c very dry, you have the nut flush draw. The turn is a 5c and you have the nut flush and start building the pot. The river is a 7h. You raise, opponent re-raises and you go all- in. Opponent calls. The dealer gives him the pot. Not easy to control Tilt. Time to teach him a lesson. Not.

The best way to avoid tilt in your play is by understanding the possibilities and odds and how the mathematical concepts of Texas Hold'em work. Stick with your strategy; if you understand how often your good hands hold up, how often they get drawn out on, how often you hit your draws, and the overall odds of certain things happening you won't get as upset when things don't go your way. Have a strategy and stick to it. If you are on Tilt, take a break from the table, never ever play while on Tilt.

The Tilt prone opponents are not hard to spot. They are the ones that complain at the table. Call people dumb. Use the word fair. We can sometimes put them on Tilt and therefore have a greater advantage. One way to Tilt your opponent is by making “stupid” raises. If the pot is $40, raise 23 or raise 17 when you have the best hand. They will usually accept the idea that you are an “idiot” because it makes then feel superior. When you win the pot, they will probably go on Tilt.

Also look for players that like to have fun. They like to catch people bluffing. When you win a pot with a bluff, show your cards. Tilt.
